Segment 1
R. Judah said: ‘Adonai — Aleph-Daleth-Nun-Yod — the Holy One, blessed be He, is so called; and that by which He is called is as it is written. And what is it?’ R. Jose says: ‘“visions of God” (Ezek. 1, 1) — mar'ath is written. And what is mar'ath? The perfection of all: the Tetragrammaton. Mar'ath — to what does it belong? To Aleph-Daleth-Nun-Yod. This one is read as it is written, and that one is not read as it is written; and therefore He is called by this one, and therefore mar'ath Elohim is written.’
Segment 2
THE LORD (Adon) GOD. R. Judah said: ‘Sometimes the superior aspect of the Deity is called by the lower Name, at other times it is the lower aspect that is given the superior Name. Here, in the phrase.”before the Lord God” (ha-ADoN TETRAGRAMMATON), the lower term Adon (Lord) is expressive of the superior aspect. This matter has already been expounded, and expounded in various ways, which, however, all converge into one. Blessed be the Merciful One, blessed be His name for evermore!’
