Segment 1א׳

אָמַר רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר כְּתִיב, (ויקרא ט״ו:ל״א) וְהִזַּרְתֶּם אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִטּוּמְאָתָם וְגוֹ' בְּטַמְּאָם אֶת מִשְׁכָּנִי אֲשֶׁר בְּתוֹכָם. וְהִזַּרְתֶּם, כְּהַאי זָר, דְּאִיהוּ זָר מְכֻּלְּהוּ, וְלָא אִתְחַבָּר בְּמָה דְּלֵיתֵיהּ דִּילֵיהּ.

R. Eleazar continued: ‘It is written: “Thus shall ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness” (Lev. 15, 31).

Segment 2ב׳

וְתָּא חֲזֵי, בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּמִסְתַּאֲבִין בְּנֵי נָשָׁא לְתַתָּא, מִסְאֲבִין לוֹן בְּכֹלָּא, וְהָא אִתְּמַר. אֲבָל, בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּרוּחַ מִסְאֲבָא אִתְּעַר (ס"א לתתא, אתער רוח וכו') חֲשַׁבְתּוּן זָר, אֶלָּא רוּחַ מִסְאֲבָא דִּלְתַתָּא, אִתְּעַר רוּחַ מִסְאֲבָא אָחֳרָא, וְאִתְיְהִיב לֵיהּ רְשׁוּתָא לְנַחְתָּא לְעָלְמָא. מַאי רְשׁוּתָא, רְשׁוּתָא דִּקְדוּשָּׁה דְּהֲוָה נָחִית וּמָחֵי בֵּיהּ, לָא אִשְׁתְּכַח, וְאִסְתְּלַּק, וּכְדֵין אִתְגַּלְיָיא דִּינָא, לָקֳבְלֵיהוֹן דְּחַיָּיבִין, וְאוֹסִיף דִּינָא עַל דִּינֵיהּ, וּכְדֵין, תְּרֵין רוּחִין מִשְׁתַּכְּחִין בְּעָלְמָא, חַד, רוּחָא דְּדִינָא, וְחַד, רוּחָא דִּמְסָאֲבָא.

When an unclean spirit is roused below, it rouses another unclean spirit above which obtains permission to go down to the world, when the spirit of holiness which used to come down and smite it is no longer there. Then judgement confronts sinners, and there are two harmful spirits in the world, one of judgement and one of uncleanness.’

Segment 3ג׳

אָמַר רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר, אִצְטְרִיכְנָא הָכָא לְמֵימַר מִלָּה דְּאוֹלִיפְנָא מֵאַבָּא. תָּא חֲזֵי, הָכָא יַלְפִינָן מִנֶּגַע דְּבֵיתָא. דְּכַד רוּחָא מִסְאֲבָא שַׁרְיָא בְּבֵיתָא וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בָּעֵי לְדַכְּאָה לֵיהּ, שָׁדַר נֶגַע צָרַעַת בְּבֵיתָא, לְקַטְרְגָא דָּא בְּדָא, וְהַהוּא נֶגַע לָא אַעְדֵּי מִבֵּיתָא, וְאַף עַל גַּב דְּרוּחַ מִסְאֲבָא אִסְתְּלַּק מֵהַהוּא בֵּיתָא, עַד דְּיִנְתְּצוּן בֵּיתָא, אֲבָנִין וְאָעִין וְכֹלָּא, כְּדֵין אִתְדָּכֵי אַתְרָא.

Said R. Eleazar: ‘Here I must say something that I have learnt from my father. Just as when an unclean spirit rests upon a house, God sends a plague of leprosy to attack it and so cause the house to be purified,

Segment 4ד׳

כְּהַאי גַּוְונָא, מַאן דְּאִסְתְּאָב וְאִתְּעַר רוּחָא מִסְאֲבָא וְשָׁארִי עֲלוֹי, כַּד בָּעֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְדַכְּאָה עָלְמָא, אִתְּעַר רוּחַ דִּינָא תַּקִּיפָא, וְאִשְׁתְּכַח בְּעָלְמָא וְשַׁרְיָא עַל הַהוּא רוּחָא מִסְאֲבָא, וּמְקַטְרְגֵי דָּא בְּדָא, עַד דְּיִתְעַבָּר מֵעָלְמָא, וְהַהוּא רוּחָא דִּינָא תַּקִּיפָא, לָא אִסְתְּלַּק מֵאַתְרֵיהּ עַד דְּיִנָּתֵץ אֲתַר, שַׁיְיפִין וְגַרְמִין וְכֹלָּא, כְּדֵין אִתְדָּכֵי עָלְמָא וְאִתְעַבְּרוּ מִנֵּיהּ רוּחִין מִסְאֲבִין, וְעָלְמָא אִשְׁתְּכַח בְּדַכְיוּ.

so if a spirit of uncleanness rests on a man and God desires to purify him, He rouses a spirit of stern judgement which contends with that unclean spirit until it is expelled. Nor does that spirit of judgement depart until it has loosened the bodily frame. Then at last is the man purified and freed from the unclean spirits.

Segment 5ה׳

וְעַל דָּא תָּנֵינָן, אָתָא לְאִסְתַּאֲבָא מִסְאֲבִין לֵיהּ ודַּאי. וַוי לֵיהּ לְבַּר נָשׁ כַּד שָׁארֵי עָלֵיהּ רוּחַ מִסְאֲבָא, וְאִשְׁתְּכַח בֵּיהּ בְּעָלְמָא, דְּוַדַּאי לִינְדַע, דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בָּעֵי לְבַעֲרָא לֵיהּ מִן עָלְמָא. זַכָּאִין אִינּוּן צַדִּיקַיָּא דְּכֻלְּהוּ קַדִּישִׁין, וְאִשְׁתְּכָחוּ בִּקְדוּשָּׁה קָמֵי מַלְכָּא קַדִישָׁא, וְשַׁרְיָא עָלַיְיהוּ רוּחַ קַדִּישָׁא, בְּהַאי עָלְמָא וּבְעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי. כֵּיוָן דְּאָתָא צַפְרָא קָמוּ אַזְלוּ.

Therefore we have learnt that if a man wants to defile himself, heaven helps to defile him, and woe to a man when an unclean spirit is found in him all his life, for this indeed shows that God desires to clear him out of the world (to come). Happy are the righteous on whom rests a spirit of holiness in this world and in the world to come’. When it was full day they went on their way,
