Segment 1א׳

וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם אֲדֹנָי יהִֹוִ"ה מַה תִּתֶּן לִי. אדנ"י אל"ף דל"ת נו"ן יו"ד. אֱלהִים יו"ד ה"א וי"ו ה"א. (נ"א אלהים יהוה בניקוד אלהים) אֶלָּא רָזָא דְמִלָּה, חִבּוּרָא דִּתְרֵין עָלְמִין כְּחֲדָא עַלְמָא תַּתָּאָה וְעַלְמָא עִלָּאָה.

AND ABRAM SAID: O LORD GOD, WHAT WILL YOU GIVE ME? Adonai: Aleph, Daleth, Nun, Yod. Elohim: Yod, He, Vau, He. Rather, the mystery of the matter is the joining of two worlds as one, the lower world and the upper world.

Segment 2ב׳

מַה תִּתֶּן לִי וְאָנֹכִי הוֹלֵךְ עֲרִירִי. דְּלֵית לִי בַּר, וְאוֹלִיפְנָא דְּכָל מָאן דְּלֵית לֵיהּ בְּרָא בְּהַאי עָלְמָא אִקְרֵי עֲרִירִי כְּמָא דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, (ויקרא כ׳:כ״א) עֲרִירִים יִהְיוּ. וְאַבְרָהָם עַל מָה אָמַר מִלָּה דָא דְּאָמַר מַה תִּתֶּן לִי. כִּבְיָכוֹל כְּאִילוּ לא הֶאֱמִין בֵּיהּ בְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא.

WHAT WILL YOU GIVE ME, SEEING I GO CHILDLESS — for I have no son. And we have learnt that everyone who has no son in this world is called “childless”, as it says, “they shall be childless” (Lev. 20, 21). And Abraham — on what ground did he say this thing, that he said “what will You give me”? As it were, as though he did not believe in the Holy One, blessed be He.

Segment 3ג׳

אֶלָּא אָמַר לֵיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אָנֹכִי מָגֵן לָךְ בְּהַאי עָלְמָא. שְׂכָרְךָ הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד בְּעָלְמָא דְאָתֵי. מִיָּד אִתְעַר אַבְרָהָם בְּרָזָא דְּחָכְמְתָא וְאָמַר מַה תִּתֶּן לִי, דְּהָא יְדַעְנָא דְּלָא קַבִּיל אֲגַר לְמֵיעַל בֵּיהּ בְּהַהוּא עָלְמָא בַּר נָשׁ דְּלָא אוֹלִיד בַּר, וְעַל דָּא אָמַר מַה תִּתֶּן לִי וְאָנֹכִי הוֹלֵךְ עֲרִירִי, דְּהָא לָא תִּתֶּן לִי דְּלָא זָכִינָא בֵּיהּ. מִכָּאן דְּבַּר נָשׁ דְּלָא זָכֵי בִּבְנִין בְּהַאי עָלְמָא לָא זָכֵי בְּהַהוּא עָלְמָא לְאֲעָלָא גּוֹ פַּרְגּוֹדָא.

Rather, the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: “I am a shield to you” in this world; “your reward shall be exceeding great” in the world to come. Immediately Abraham was stirred with the mystery of wisdom and said “what will You give me”? For I know that a man who has not begotten a son receives no reward to enter into that world; and therefore he said, “what will You give me, seeing I go childless” — for You will not give me, since I have not been found worthy of it. From here we learn that a man who is not found worthy of children in this world is not found worthy, in that world, to enter within the curtain.
