Section 4 of 14 in Korach — 6 segments
Segment 1
AND THEY FELL ON THEIR FACES AND SAID, O GOD, THE GOD OF THE SPIRITS OF ALL FLESH. Moses and Aaron at this point risked their lives, since “falling on one’s face” always means a supplication to the place of the Tree of Death, the place where is the bundle of all souls, to which they ascend and from which they issue.’
Segment 2
R. Judah discoursed on the verse: “Hear my words, you wise men, and give ear to me, you who have knowledge” (Job 34, 2). This verse Elihu said. Observe what is written: “And against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer,” etc. (Job 32, 3) — for they were speaking words, and Job was not comforted by them. From here we learn that one who comes in to comfort a mourner must first order his words; for Job’s friends were speaking words of truth, but not to comfort him, since what is needed are words to which he himself will assent (in the way of truth), and then he will accept the judgement upon himself and acknowledge the Holy King concerning it. What is written? “And Elihu had waited to speak to Job with words,” etc. (Job 32, 4) — for afterwards he acknowledged the Holy One, blessed be He, and accepted upon himself the judgement of Heaven.
Segment 3
Observe: it is written, “Therefore hear me, you men of understanding: far be it from God to do wickedness, and from the Almighty to commit iniquity” (Job 34, 10). “Therefore hear me, you men of understanding” — those who are whole in everything, fit to discern words. “Far be it from God to do wickedness” — this is as it is written, “and God has indignation every day” (Ps. 7). “And from the Almighty to commit iniquity” — this one rests over against that one (as has been explained): El Shaddai. “For the work of a man will He requite to him” (Job 34, 10): a man walks in this world and does his deeds and sins before his Master, and that deed hangs over him to pay him his judgement. This is as it is written, “For the work of a man will He requite to him” — that deed itself requites him.
