Segment 1א׳

פָּתַח רִבִּי חִיָּיא אֲבַתְרֵיהּ וְאָמַר, כִי תָּבֹאוּ אֶל הָאָרֶץ וּנְטַעְתֶּם כָּל עֵץ מַאֲכָל וְגוֹ'. וּבַשָּׁנָה הָרְבִיעִית יִהְיֶה כָּל פִּרְיוֹ קֹדֶשׁ הִלּוּלִים לַיְיָ'. כִי תָּבֹאוּ אֶל הָאָרֶץ, הָא אוּקְמוּהָ חַבְרַיָּיא, אֲבָל תָּא חֲזֵי, דְּהָא אִילָנָא לָא עָבִיד פֵּירִין, אֶלָּא בְּאַרְעָא. וְאַרְעָא אַפִּיק לְהוֹן, וְאַחְזֵי הַהוּא אִיבָּא לְעָלְמָא. וְאַרְעָא לָא עַבְדָּא פֵּירִין אֶלָּא מִגּוֹ חֵילָא אָחֳרָא דְּעָלָהּ. כְּמָה דְּנוּקְבָּא לָא עַבְדָּא פֵּירִין, אֶלָּא מִגּוֹ חֵילָא דִּדְכוּרָא.

Observe’, he said, ‘that the tree only produces fruit from the earth, which is its true source, nor does the earth produce the fruit save through another power above it, just as the female only produces issue from the energy of the male.

Segment 2ב׳

וְהַהוּא אִיבָּא, לָא אִשְׁתְּלִים בְּאַשְׁלְמוּתָא, עַד תְּלַת שְׁנִין. וְחֵילָא לָא אִתְפָּקְדָא עָלֵיהּ לְעֵילָּא עַד דְּאִשְׁתְּלִים. בָּתַר דְּאִשְׁתְּלִים אִתְפָּקְדָא עָלֵיהּ חֵילָא וְאַרְעָא אִתְתְּקָנַת בֵּיהּ. דְּהָא עַד תְּלַת שְׁנִין אַרְעָא לָא אִתְתְּקָנַת בֵּיהּ וְלָא (אשתכחת) אִשְׁתְּלִימַת (ס"א אתבסמת) (נ"א אסתכמת) עִמֵּיהּ. בָּתַר דְּאִשְׁתְּלִים וְאִתְתְּקָנוּ כַּחֲדָא כְּדֵין הוּא שְׁלֵימוּתָא.

Now, that fruit does not reach its complete state until three years have passed, nor is any power appointed over it above until it has reached its complete state. Then, too, the earth is established with it, and the establishment of both constitutes completeness.

Segment 3ג׳

תָּא חֲזֵי, נוּקְבָּא, עַד תְּלָת זִמְנִין דְּאִתְעַבְּרָא, אִיבָּא דִּמְעָהָא לָא אִשְׁתְּלִים. בָּתַר ג' עִידוּאָן, נוּקְבָּא אִתְתְּקָנַת בְּהַהוּא אִיבָּא, וְאִסְתְּכָּמוּ כַּחֲדָא. כְּדֵין הַהוּא אִיבָּא שְׁלִימוּ דְּכֹלָּא, וּשְׁפִּירוּ דְּכֹלָּא. בָּתַר דְּנָפַק, עַד ג' שְׁנִין לָא אִית לֵיהּ חֵילָא לְעֵילָּא, דְּהָא כְּדֵין אִשְׁתְּלִים בִּשׁוּלָא דִּילֵיהּ. לֵוִי אִתְרְעֵי מִכֹּלָּא, תְּלִיתָאָה לְאִמֵיהּ, דְּאִתְתָּקָּנַת בֵּיהּ, וְאִסְתַכְּמַת ס"א (ואתבסמת) בַּהֲדֵיהּ.

Similarly the progeny of a woman does not reach completeness till her third delivery, and therefore Levi was chosen from all the sons of Jacob, being the third to his mother who was established with him. Thus after three years a power is appointed over the fruit above, and in the fourth year “all its fruit is holy for giving praise” to the Holy One, blessed be He.

Segment 4ד׳

בָּתַר ג' שְׁנִין, אִתְפְּקָּדַת עָלֵיהּ (ס"א אתפקד עלה) חֵילָא עִלָּאָה לְעֵילָּא. וּבַשָּׁנָה הָרְבִיעִית, יִהְיֶה כָּל פִּרְיוֹ קֹדֶשׁ הִלּוּלִים. מַאי קֹדֶשׁ הִלּוּלִים. תּוּשְׁבְּחָן, לְשַׁבְּחָא לֵיהּ לְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא. עַד הָכָא. מִכָּאן וְאֵילָךְ רָזָא דְּמִלָּה, דְּבַשָּׁנָה הָרְבִיעִית מִזְדְּוָּוגַת כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל לְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, וְהִלּוּלָא חַד אִשְׁתְּכַח. דִּכְתִּיב קֹדֶשׁ הִלּוּלִים, הִלוּלָא וְחֶדְוָה בְּזִמְנָא (ס"א בזווגא) חֲדָא.

For in the fourth year the Community of Israel becomes united with the Holy One, blessed be He, and then celestial powers are appointed over the world, an appropriate one for each object. Thenceforward all products are blessed and are permitted to be eaten, since all are in their complete state, in regard both to heaven and to earth. Till that time it is forbidden to eat of them; and he who eats of them is like one who has no share in the Holy One, blessed be He, and in the Community of Israel, since that fruit is as yet under no holy celestial control, nor is the strength of the earth established in it, so that he who eats of it shows that he has no portion either above or below, and if he makes a blessing over it, it is an idle blessing.’

Segment 5ה׳

מַאי שָׁנָה (הרביעית) דָּא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא. וְתָנֵינָן, שָׁנָה הָרְבִיעִית, דָּא כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל דְּאִיהִי קַיְּימָא רְבִיעָאָה לְכוּרְסְיָיא, וְכֹלָּא חַד, דְּהָא כְּדֵין קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מִזְדַּוַּוג בָּהּ בִּכְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל, וּכְדֵין הִיא קֹדֶשׁ, וְהִלּוּלָא קַדִּישָׁא אִשְׁתְּכַח, (וקודשא בריך הוא אזדווג בהדה) וּכְדֵין חַיָּילִין אִתְמָנָן עַל עָלְמָא, עַל כָּל מִלָּה וּמִלָּה כַּדְקָא חֲזֵי לֵיהּ מִכָּאן וּלְהָלְאָה מִתְבָּרְכָאן כֻּלְּהוּ, וְשָׁארִי לְמֵיכַל, דְּהָא כֻּלְּהוּ בִּשְׁלֵימוּתָא דְּכֹלָּא, בִּשְׁלֵימוּתָא דְּעֵילָּא וְתַתָּא.

What is the year (the fourth)? This is the Holy One, blessed be He. And we have learnt: “the fourth year” is the Community of Israel, who stands fourth to the throne; and all is one, for then the Holy One, blessed be He, is joined with her, with the Community of Israel, and then she is holy, and a holy wedding feast is found (and the Holy One, blessed be He, was joined with her); and then celestial powers are appointed over the world, over each and every matter as befits it. From then onwards all are blessed, and it is permitted to eat, for they are all in the completeness of all, in the completeness of above and below.
