Segment 1

The eyes of the head are those eyes against which the wicked do not guard themselves: eyes that sleep and do not sleep. And therefore they are called “His eyes are like doves (yonim)” (S. S. 5, 12). What is yonim? As you say, “And you shall not wrong (tonu) one another” (Lev. 25, 17). And of this it is written, “And they say: ‘The Lord will not see,’” etc. (Ps. 94, 7). And it is written, “He that planted the ear, shall He not hear?” etc. (Ibid.).

Segment 2

The adornment that is over the eye: hairs that are measured in a perfect measure. From those hairs hang a thousand and seven hundred lords of providence, to wage war. And then all of them rise from their chains, and the eyes are opened.

Segment 3

The covering that is over the eyes: the eyebrows are joined with them. And a thousand (a variant adds: and four hundred) myriads of lords of shields are joined with them, and they are called the covering of the eyes. And all those that are called the eyes of the Lord do not open and are not aroused, save at the time when these coverings of the eyebrows are parted, the lower from the upper. And at the hour when the lower eyebrows are parted from the upper, and give place to watch, the eyes are opened, and it appears like one who wakes from his sleep. The eyes turn and see the open eye, and are bathed in its whiteness. And when they are bathed, the lords of judgements over Israel are subdued. And therefore it is written, “Awake, why do You sleep, O Lord? Arouse Yourself,” etc. (Ps. 44, 24).
