The Zohar · Idra Rabba
Zohar, Idra Rabba 8
Section 8 of 52 in Idra Rabba — 22 segments
Segment 1
The eyes of the White Head differ from other eyes: there is no covering over the eye, and there are no eyebrows over the eye. What is the reason? As it is written, “Behold, He that keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps” (Ps. 121, 4) — Israel above. And it is written, “whose eyes are open” (Jer. 32, 19). And it has been taught: whatever comes in mercy has no covering over the eye and no eyebrows over the eye; how much more so the White Head, which needs nothing (a variant reads: guarding).
Segment 2
R. Simeon said to R. Abba: To what is this an allusion? He said to him: To the fish of the sea, which have no covering over the eye and no eyebrows over the eye, and do not sleep, and need no guarding over the eye. How much more so the Ancient of Ancients, who needs no guarding; and how much more so, since He watches over all, and all is nourished by Him, and He does not sleep. This is what is written: “Behold, He that keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps” — Israel above.
Segment 3
It is written, “Behold, the eye of the Lord is toward those who fear Him” (Ps. 33, 18); and it is written, “the eyes of the Lord, they run to and fro through the whole earth” (Zech. 4, 10). There is no difficulty: this one is in the Small of Countenance, that one in the Long of Countenance. And with all this, they are two eyes, and they are whitened (a variant reads: and they return) into one: an eye that is white within white, and white that includes all white.
