Segment 1

And it has been taught in the Book of the Hidden Mystery: the Holy Ancient One wished to see whether the judgements had been sweetened, and whether these two had cleaved one to the other. And from the side of the female there went forth a strong judgement (a variant adds: which the world could not bear), as it is written, “And the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived and bore Cain, and said: I have gotten,” etc. (Gen. 4, 1). And the world could not bear it, because she was not sweetened, and the mighty serpent had cast into her the filth of harsh judgement; and therefore she could not be sweetened. And when this Cain went forth from the side of the female, he went forth strong and harsh: strong in his judgements, harsh in his judgements. Once he had gone forth, she was weakened and sweetened. After this she brought forth another, sweeter, and the first, which had been strong and harsh, went up; and all the judgements did not mingle (a variant reads: meet) before him (a variant reads: and all the judgements were (not) aroused) with him.

Segment 2

Observe what is written: “And it came to pass, when they were in the field” (Gen. 4, 8). “In the field”: that which is known above — in the field that is called the field of apples. And this judgement prevailed over his brother, because it was harsher than he, and bent him down and hid him beneath it, until the Holy One, blessed be He, was roused over this and removed him from before him, and sank him in the hollow of the great abyss. And He included his brother in the sinking-place of the great sea, which sweetens the supernal tears. And from them souls descend to the world, each man according to his ways.

Segment 3

And although they are hidden, they spread out one into the other, and become one body. And from this body descend the souls of the wicked, the sinners, the hard of spirit. From both of them together — could you think so? Rather, this one to its sides, and that one to its sides. Happy are the righteous, whose souls are drawn forth from this holy body that is called Adam, which comprises all — the place where the holy diadems and crowns are joined together — in the bundle of the balance (a variant reads: of the cluster).
