Segment 1א׳

דָּבָר אַחֵר לְךָ אָמַר לִבִּי בַּקְּשׁוּ פָנָי. בְּגִינָךְ אָמַר לִבִּי לִבְנֵי עָלְמָא, בַּקְּשׁוּ (ס"א את פניך יי' אבקש) פָנָי אִלֵּין זִמְנַיָּיא וְחַגַיָיא דְּכֻלְּהוּ זַמִּין לְהוֹן לַאֲתַר דְּאִקְרֵי קֹדֶשׁ, בְּגִין לְעַטְרָא לוֹן, כָּל חַד וְחַד בְּיוֹמֵיהּ, כָּל חַד וְחַד בִּזְמַנֵיהּ, וְיִשְׁאַבוּן כֻּלְּהוּ מֵהַהוּא עֲמִיקָא דַּעֲמִיקְתָא, דְּנַחֲלִין וּמַבּוּעִין נָפְקִין מִנֵּיהּ, בְּגִין כַּךְ כְּתִיב מִקְרָאֵי קֹדֶשׁ, זְמִינִין אִינּוּן לְהַהוּא אֲתַר דְּאִקְרֵי קֹדֶשׁ, לְאִתְעַטְּרָא בֵּיהּ, וּלְאִשְׁתַּאֲבָא בֵּיהּ, בְּגִין דְּיִתְקַדְּשׁוּן כֻּלְהוֹן כַּחֲדָא, וְיִשְׁתְּכַח בְּהוּ חֶדְוָותָא.

We may also interpret the word “face” to refer to the appointed seasons and festivals, all of which were invited by David to the place called “holy”, in order to crown each of them on its day and its appointed time, that all might draw from that most profound source from which issue streams and fountains. Therefore they are called “invited to holiness”—.invited to that place called “holiness” to be crowned with it and draw from it that all may be sanctified together and joy may be found among them.

רִבִּי אַבָּא אָמַר, מִקְרָאֵי קֹדֶשׁ: זְמִינִין דְּקֹדֶשׁ. וְכַד מֵהַאי זְמִינִין, זְמִינִין מִן נַחֲלָא דְּנַגִּיד וְנָפִיק. לְמַלְכָּא דְּזַמִּין בְּנֵי נָשָׁא לִסְעוּדָתֵיהּ, אַעְטָּר קָמַיְיהוּ מִכָּל זִינֵי מֵיכְלָא דְּעָלְמָא, אַפְתַּח לְהוּ גַּרְבֵּי חַמְרָא, שַׁפִּיר בְּרֵיחָא, שַׁפִּיר לְמִשְׁתְּיָיא. דְּהָכִי אִתְחֲזֵי, מַאן דִּמְזַמִּין לְמֵיכְלָא וּלְמִשְׁתְּיָיא זַמִּין. כַּךְ מִקְרָאֵי קֹדֶשׁ, כֵּיוָן דְּאִינּוּן זְמִינִין לִסְעוּדָתָא דְּמַלְכָּא, זְמִינִין אִינּוּן לְחַמְרָא טַב וְשַׁפִּיר דְּמִנְטְרָא. (כמה דאת אמר (שיר השירים א׳:ב׳) כי טובים דודיך מיין) וְעַל דָּא מִקְרָאֵי קֹדֶשׁ כְּתִיב.

R. Abba said that “holy convocations” means “invited by holiness”, and when they are invited by this, they are invited by the Stream that issues forth perennially. We may compare it to a king who, having invited people to a banquet, sets before them all manner of dishes and opens for them casks of well flavoured wine, for he who invites invites to eat and drink. So the “holy convocations”, since they are invited to the banquet of the King, are invited to partake of the good wine which has long been kept in store. Israel, too, are called “holiness”, because they are invited by the holiness above; therefore they should prepare a banquet and rejoice, since for them it is fitting.

אֲשֶׁר תִּקְרְאוּ אוֹתָם בְּמוֹעֲדָם, כְּתִיב (שמות כ״ב:ל׳) וְאַנְשֵׁי קֹדֶשׁ תִּהְיוּן לִי, יִשְׂרָאֵל לְתַתָּא אִקְרוּן אַנְשֵׁי קֹדֶשׁ. כֵּיוָן דִּזְמִינִין אִינּוּן מִקֹּדֶשׁ דִּלְעֵילָּא אַתּוּן אַנְשֵׁי קֹדֶשׁ לְתַתָּא זְמִינָא לְהוּ, כְּדֵין אַתְקִינוּ סְעוּדָתָא, וְחַדוּ, דְּהָא לְכוּ אִתְחֲזֵי, בְּגִין דְּאַתּוּן אִתְקְרוּן אַנְשֵׁי קֹדֶשׁ, וְיֵהוֹן כֻּלְּהוּ זְמִינִין בְּכָל סִטְרִין דְּקֹדֶשׁ לְעֵילָּא וְתַתָּא.

WHICH YOU SHALL PROCLAIM IN THEIR APPOINTED SEASON. It is written, “And you shall be holy men to Me” (Ex. 22, 30): Israel below are called holy men. Since they are invited from the holiness above, saying, You holy men below, it invites you, then set out a banquet and rejoice, for it is fitting for you, because you are called holy men; and let them all be invited on every side of holiness, above and below.
