Segment 1א׳

(ויקרא כ״א:א׳) וַיֹּאמֶר יְיָ' אֶל מֹשֶׁה אֱמוֹר אֶל הַכֹּהֲנִים בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵיהֶם לְנֶפֶשׁ לֹא יִטַּמָּא בְּעַמָּיו. אָמַר רִבִּי יוֹסֵי, מַאי טַעְמָא דָּא לָקֳבֵל דָּא, דִּכְתִּיב לְעֵילָּא, וְאִישׁ אוֹ אִשָּׁה כִּי יִהְיֶה בָהֶם אוֹב אוֹ יִדְּעוֹנִי מוֹת יוּמָתוּ, וְסָמִיךְ לֵיהּ אֱמוֹר אֶל הַכֹּהֲנִים. אֶלָּא (משמע) כֵּיוָן דְּאַזְהַר לְהוּ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, לְקַדְּשָׁא לְהוּ בְּכֹלָּא, אַזְהַר לְהוּ לְכַהֲנֵי לְקַדְּשָׁא לוֹן, וְכֵן לַלְוִיִּם. לְכַהֲנֵי מִנַּיִן. דִּכְתִּיב אֱמוֹר אֶל הַכֹּהֲנִים. לְלֵוָאֵי מִנַּיִן. דִּכְתִּיב, (במדבר י״ח:כ״ו) וְאֶל הַלְוִיִּם תְּדַבֵּר וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵיהֶם. בְּגִין דְּיִשְׁתַּכְּחוּן כֻּלְּהוּ זַכָּאִין קַדִּישִׁין דַּכְיָין.

AND THE LORD SAID UNTO MOSES, SPEAK UNTO THE PRIESTS THE SONS OF AARON AND SAY UNTO THEM, THERE SHALL NONE DEFILE HIMSELF FOR THE DEAD AMONG HIS PEOPLE. R. Jose said: ‘What is the connection of this with the verse that immediately precedes, “A man also or a woman that hath a familiar spirit or that is a wizard shall be put to death” (Lev. 20, 27)? It is this: that having admonished the Israelites to sanctify themselves, the Scripture now admonishes the priests to sanctify themselves specially. Later, too, it admonishes the Levites (Num. 18, 21 et seq.), so that all should become holy and pure.

Segment 2ב׳

אֱמוֹר אֶל הַכֹּהֲנִים בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן, מַאי טַעְמָא הָכָא בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן, וְכִי לָא יְדַעְנָא דִּבְנֵי אַהֲרֹן נִינְהוּ. אֶלָּא בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן, וְלָא בְּנֵי לֵוִי, דְּאַהֲרֹן דְּהוּא שֵׁירוּתָא דְּכָל כַּהֲנֵי דְּעָלְמָא, דְּבֵיהּ אִתְרְעֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מִכֹּלָּא, בְּגִין לְמֶעְבַּד שְׁלָמָא בְּעָלְמָא, וּבְגִין דְּאַהֲרֹן אָרְחוֹי סַלִיקוּ לֵיהּ לְהַאי, דְּכָל יוֹמוֹי דְּאַהֲרֹן הֲוָה מִשְׁתָּדַּל לְאַסְגָּאָה שְׁלָמָא בְּעָלְמָא. וּבְגִין דְּאוֹרְחוֹי כַּךְ, סָלִיק לֵיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְהַאי, לְמֵיעַל שְׁלָמָא בְּפָמַלְיָא דִּלְעֵילָּא, וּבְגִין כַּךְ אֱמוֹר אֶל הַכֹּהֲנִים בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן.

The priests are designated here “the sons of Aaron”, to show that they are something more than merely the sons of Levi, Aaron being the starting point of the priesthood because God chose him to make peace in the world, his conduct having entitled him to this distinction, since all his days he strove to promote peace in the world, so that God appointed him to bring peace to the celestial family also.

אֱמוֹר אֶל הַכֹּהֲנִים בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵיהֶם. רִבִּי יְהוּדָה פָּתַח, (תהילים ל״א:כ׳) מָה רַב טוּבְךָ אֲשֶׁר צָפַנְתָּ לִּירֵאֶיךָ וְגוֹ'. מַה רַב טוּבְךָ, כַּמָה עִלָּאָה וְיַקִּירָא, הַהוּא נְהוֹרָא עִלָּאָה דְּאִקְרֵי טוֹב, דִּכְתִּיב וַיַּרְא אֱלֹהִים אֶת הָאוֹר כִּי טוֹב. וְדָא הוּא אוֹר הַגָנוּז, דְּבֵיהּ עָבִיד קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא טַב בְּעָלְמָא, וְלָא מָנַע לֵיהּ בְּכָל יוֹמָא, בְּגִין דְּבֵיהּ מִתְקַיֵּים עָלְמָא, וְקָאִים עָלֵיהּ. אֲשֶׁר צָפַנְתָּ לִירֵאֶיךָ, דִּתְנָן, נְהוֹרָא עִלָּאָה עָבֵד קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא כַּד בָּרָא עָלְמָא, וְגָנִיז לֵיהּ לְצַדִּיקַיָּא לְזִמְנָא דְּאָתֵי. הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, אֲשֶׁר צָפַנְתָּ לִירֵאֶיךָ.

SPEAK TO THE PRIESTS THE SONS OF AARON, AND SAY TO THEM. R. Judah opened with the verse: “How great is Your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear You,” etc. (Ps. 31, 20). “How great is Your goodness”: how supernal and how precious is that supernal light which is called good, as it is written, “And God saw the light, that it was good.” This is the hidden light, with which the Holy One, blessed be He, does good in the world; and He does not withhold it any day, because by it the world is sustained and upon it the world stands. “Which You have laid up for those who fear You”: for we have learnt that the Holy One, blessed be He, made a supernal light when He created the world, and stored it away for the righteous for the time to come. That is what is written, “which You have laid up for those who fear You.”
