Segment 1
THAT IS THE WELL WHEREOF THE LORD SAID UNTO MOSES, GATHER THE PEOPLE, ETC. This well never left them.
Segment 2
R. Abba said: In every place it is written hu (he) and we read hi (she), male and female as one. And in the supernal totality, the letter He is female, the letter Vau is male, and the letter Aleph is the totality of all, for the Aleph abides in completeness. Happy are Israel: although they are below, they cleave to the supernal totality of all. And therefore it is written, “It is He that has made us, and not we ourselves” (Ps. 100), and it is written with an Aleph: the totality of Vau and He, with the Aleph that comprises all.
Segment 3
It may be asked, How could they all draw from it? It issued into twelve streams and a channel went forth in every direction, and when Israel encamped and required water they used to stand by it and recite this song: “Ascend, O well, bring up thy waters to provide water for all, so that they may be watered from thee”.
