Segment 1א׳

רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר פָּתַח, (איוב א׳:ו׳) וַיְהִי הַיּוֹם וַיָּבֹאוּ בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים לְהִתְיַצֵּב עַל יְיָ' וַיָּבוֹא גַּם הַשָּׂטָן בְּתוֹכָם. וַיְהִי הַיּוֹם: דָּא (מ"ד א') רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה, דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא קָאִים לְמֵידָן עָלְמָא. כְּגַוְונָא דָּא, (מלכים ב ד׳:י״א) וַיְהִי הַיּוֹם וַיָּבֹא שָׁמָּה. הַהוּא יוֹמָא יוֹם טוֹב דְּרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה הֲוָה.

R. Eleazar then discoursed on the verse: And there was a day when the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, and Satan came also among them (Job 1, 6). ‘This “day” ‘, said he, ‘was New Year’s Day, on which the Holy One sits in judgement on the world.

Segment 2ב׳

וַיָּבֹאוּ בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים, אִלֵּין רַבְרְבִין מְמָנָן שְׁלִיחָן בְּעָלְמָא, לְאַשְׁגְּחָא בְּעוֹבָדִין דִּבְנִי נָשָׁא. לְהִתְיַצֵּב עַל ה': כְּמָה דְּאַתְּ אָמֵר, (מלכים א כ״ב:י״ט) וְכָל צְבָא הַשָּׁמַיִם עוֹמְדִים עָלָיו מִימִינוֹ וּמִשְּׂמֹאלוֹ. אֲבָל לְהִתְיַצֵּב עַל ה' בְּהַאי קְרָא אַשְׁכַּחְנָא רְחִימוּתָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא עָלַיְיהוּ דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל. בְּגִין, דְּהָנֵי שְׁלִיחָן, דְּאִינּוּן מְמָנָן לְאַשְׁגָּחָא עַל עוֹבָדִין דִּבְנֵי נָשָׁא, אַזְלִין וְשָׁאטִין וְנַטְלִין אִינּוּן עוֹבָדִין כֻּלְּהוּ, וּבְיוֹמָא דְּקָאֵי דִּינָא לְמֵיקָם, לְמֵידָן עָלְמָא, אִתְעָבִידוּ קַטֵיגוֹרִין לְמֵיקָם עָלַיְיהוּ דִּבְנֵי נָשָׁא. וְתָא חֲזֵי, מִכָּל עַמִּין דְּעָלְמָא, לָא קַיְימִין לְאַשְׁגָּחָא בְּעוֹבָדֵיהוֹן, בַּר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל בִּלְחוֹדַיְיהוּ, בְּגִין דְּאִלֵּין בְּנִין לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא.

“The sons of God” are the supernal beings who are appointed to watch the actions of mankind. The expression “to stand before the Lord” is parallel to the verse, “AII the hosts of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left” (I Kings 22, 16). But in this verse it has a more special significance, viz. to make manifest the love of the Holy One for Israel. For these messengers who are appointed to watch over the works of men roam hither and thither throughout the world, gathering up the deeds of all creatures so that on New Year’s Day, the day of judgement, they may stand before the Lord with their burden of accusations. Yet of all the peoples of the earth, it is only one- Israel-whose works are examined by them carefully and in detail, for the Israelites are the Holy One’s children in a particular sense,

וְכַד לָא אִשְׁתְּכָחוּ עוֹבָדִין דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל כְּדְקָא יֵאוֹת, כִּבְיָכוֹל אִינּוּן מְמָנָן שְׁלִיחָן, כַּד בָּעָאן לְקַיְּימָא עַל אִינּוּן עוֹבָדִין דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, עַל ה' וַדַּאי קַיְימִין, דְּהָא כַּד יִשְׂרָאֵל עַבְדִין עוֹבָדִין דְּלָא כַּשְׁרָן, כִּבְיָכוֹל מַתִּישִׁין חֵילָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא. וְכַד עַבְדִין עוֹבָדִין דְּכַשְׁרָן, יַהֲבִין תּוּקְפָּא וְחֵילָא לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא. וְעַל דָּא כְּתִיב, (תהילים ס״ח:ל״ה) תְּנוּ עֹז לֵאלֹהִים. בְּמָה. בְּעוֹבָדִין דְּכַשְׁרָן. וְעַל דָּא, בְּהַהוּא יוֹמָא, כֻּלְּהוּ רַבְרְבָן מְמָנָן אִתְכָּנָשׁוּ עַל ה'. עַל ה' וַדַּאי, דְּהָא כֵּיוָן דְּעַל יִשְׂרָאֵל אִתְכָּנָשׁוּ, עָלֵיהּ אִתְכָּנָשׁוּ.

and when their works are not according to the Divine purpose, they actually weaken the power of the Holy One Himself, but when they do His will they, as it were, increase His power and might-“give strength to God” (Ps. 68, 35). Thus “the sons of God”, the supernal messengers, when they “stand” with their accusations against Israel, stand also “against (‘al) God”.
