אָמַר רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, מַצַּת כְּתִיב, כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, (יחזקאל א׳:א׳) מַרְאֹת אֱלהִים. וְלָמָּה אִתְקְרֵי מַצַּת. דִּינָא. (רכ"ג ב') דִּינָא קַדִּישָׁא. דִּינָא דְּאִתְאַחֲדָא בִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא. דִּינָא דְּלָא הֲוָה תַּקִּיפָא כָּל הַהוּא זִמְנָא בְּגַוַויְיהוּ דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, דְּהָא קַיְּימָא סִיהֲרָא בִּפְגִימוּתָא. וְעַל דְּקַיְּימָא סִיהֲרָא בִּפְגִימוּתָא, (דברים ט״ז:ג׳) לֶחֶם עֹנִי כְּתִיב.

Said R. Simeon further: ‘The unleavened bread is called “the bread of poverty ” (Deut. 16, 3), because at that time the moon was not at full strength, the reason being that,

מַאי טַעְמָא קַיְּימָא בִּפְגִימוּתָא. בְּגִין דְּלָא אִתְפְּרָעוּ, וְלָא אִתְגַּלְיָא הַאי אָת קַדִּישָׁא. גְּזִירִין הֲווֹ וְלָא אִתְפְּרָעוּ, אֵימָתַי אִתְפְּרָעוּ, בְּשַׁעֲתָא דִּכְתִּיב, (שמות ט״ו:כ״ה) שָׁם שָׂם לוֹ חֹק וּמִשְׁפָּט וְשָׁם נִסָּהוּ, וְאַף עַל גַּב דְּאוֹקִימְנָא הַאי קְרָא בְּמִלָּה אַחֲרָא, כֹּלָּא הֲוָה וְיֵאוֹת.

although the Israelites were circumcised, the rite had not been completed by “peri’ah“, and therefore the seal of the covenant was not revealed in its complete form. But later, when this completion had been achieved-namely at Marah, where Moses “made for them a statute and an ordinance” (Ex. 15, 25)-

וְאִי תֵּימָא דְּבִימֵי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אִתְפְּרָעוּ. לָאו הָכִי, אֶלָּא אִינּוּן דִּכְתִּיב, (יהושע ה׳:ה׳) וְכָל הָעָם הַיִּלּוֹדִים בַּמִּדְבָּר בַּדֶּרֶךְ וְגוֹ'. בָּתַר דְּאִתְפְּרָעוּ, אָמַר קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, בְּקַדְמִיתָא אֲכַלְתּוּן מַצּוֹת, דְּקַיְּימָא סִיהֲרָא בִּפְגִימוּתָא, וְאִקְרֵי לֶחֶם עֹנִי, מִכָּאן וּלְהָלְאָה הַאי לֶחֶם מֵאֲתָר אַחֲרָא לֶהֱוֵי. מַאי הוּא. דִּכְתִּיב, (שמות ט״ז:ד׳) הִנְנִי מַמְטִיר לָכֶם לֶחֶם מִן הַשָּׁמָיִם. לָא מִן סִיהֲרָא כְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא, אֶלָּא מִן הַשָּׁמָיִם מַמָּשׁ, כְּמָה דִּכְתִּיב, (בראשית כ״ז:כ״ח) וְיִתֵּן לְךָ הָאֱלהִים מִטַּל הַשָּׁמַיִם.

the Holy One spake unto them, saying: “Until now ye have eaten the ‘bread of poverty’, but from now on your bread shall emanate from a far other region: ‘I will rain bread from heaven for you’” (Ibid. 16, 4). This phrase means literally “from heaven”, that is, from the very centre of Grace, and not, as previously, from the blemished “Moon”.
