Zohar, Beshalach 33
Section 33 of 34 in Beshalach — 9 segments
Segment 1
R. Jose said: ‘How are we to understand the words, “and they saw the God of Israel” (Ex. 24, 10)? Who can see the Holy One? Is it not written: “No man can see Me and live”? It means that a rainbow appeared above them in radiant colours resplendent with the beauty of His grace. Therefore the saying that he who gazes at a rainbow gazes, as it were, at the Shekinah.
Segment 2
For the same reason it is not right to look at the fingers of the priests when they spread out their hands to bless the people (the Shekinah “showing Herself through the lattice”, i.e. through the priests’ fingers).’
Segment 3
In the rainbow above — in its colours. For whoever gazes at its colours, it is as though he gazed at the place above; and it is forbidden to gaze at it, so that he should not put the Shekinah to contempt. The rainbow below, what is it? That sign of the covenant which is impressed in a man; for whoever gazes at it puts to contempt that which is above.
