Section 1 of 34 in Beshalach — 27 segments

Segment 1

AND IT CAME TO PASS WHEN PHARAOH SENT AWAY THE PEOPLE, ETC R. Simeon discoursed here on the verse: “A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon shigionoth” (Hab. 3, 1). ‘Why’, he said, ‘is this vision of Habakkuk designated “prayer”, a title unique in the prophetic writings? Why do we find only a prayer of Habakkuk and not of Isaiah or Jeremiah?

Segment 2

But this is what we have learnt: Elisha attained in this world what no other prophet attained, save Moses. Observe what is written: “And it happened one day that Elisha passed to Shunem, where there was a great woman” (2 Kings 4, 8). What is meant by “a great woman”? Great in her deeds; for all the members of the household took pride in her, and she was the mainstay of the house. And because her husband was not to be found in the house, so as to be its mainstay, it was not he who was mentioned, but she.

Segment 3

Further, “where there was a great woman”: great above all other women of the world. For when other women of the world see a guest in the house they are vexed at him and press him hard, and still more at spending money on him; but she rejoiced in the guest, and rejoiced to spend money on him — and all the more when she saw Elisha, in whom she rejoiced exceedingly. Therefore the praise of the whole matter is the woman’s, since the guest of the house is the woman’s charge. And so, “where there was a great woman” — great above other women.
