Section 60 of 102 in Bereshit — 3 segments
Segment 1
Another explanation of AND THE EARTH: as we have said, it is to include the lower earth, which was made with several abodes, all after the supernal pattern. And this is the meaning of “the earth was formless and void, and darkness, and spirit”. These are the abodes of the earth: Erez, Adamah, Gia, Neshiyah, Ziyah, Arka, Tebel. And the greatest of them all is Tebel, as it is written, “And He will judge the world (tebel) in righteousness” (Ps. 9, 9).
Segment 2
Said R. Jose: ‘What is Ziyah?’ He said to him: ‘This is the place of Gehinnom, as it says, “a land of drought (ziyah) and of the shadow of death” (Jer. 2, 6). And the inner meaning of this is what is written, “and darkness was upon the face of the deep” — this is the mystery of the place of Gehinnom. This is Ziyah, the place of the angel of death, as we have said, who darkens the faces of created beings. And this is the place of the supernal darkness.’
Segment 3
TOHU: this is Neshiyah, in which no appearance at all is seen, so that it is forgotten by all; and therefore it is called Neshiyah (forgetfulness). AND BOHU: this is Arka, a place that is not forgotten. R. Hiya said: this is Gia. AND THE SPIRIT OF GOD HOVERED: this corresponds to Tebel, which is nourished from the spirit of God. And all is one.
