Segment 1
By what? Because he sanctified His name, blessed be it, before the many, and entered the fire to be burned himself, to fulfil in him “the graven images of their gods you shall burn with fire” (Deut. 7, 25). And not only that, but he brought his father Terah back in repentance, and brought him and his mother and all the masters of that generation into the Garden of Eden. And so he was whitened in the fire like silver, which is the King’s coin, and which was falsified with lead: it is put into the fire, and the lead comes out — that is Ishmael; and therefore he came forth mocking, with idolatry. And Adam remained whitened; and this is the change of name. For when Adam was brought round in transmigration, there had to be made for him a change of name, a change of place and a change of deed.
Segment 2
Afterwards Isaac came, and he was strengthened in him from the second sin, of which it was said concerning Adam — and that is the shedding of blood; and this caused the trial of Isaac by the knife. And he was refined in him, like one who sifts the food out of the refuse; and the refuse came out — Esau, a shedder of blood.
Segment 3
Afterwards Jacob came, and He grafted him into Laban, and he became a servant to him. This is as it is written, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel” (Gen. 29, 18). And by that cause, that he exchanged her for her sister, he served another seven years — to bring out the two drops that Adam cast in a strange place; and this is the uncovering of nakedness. And this is “saying.” And he brought them out from Laban the Aramean, the serpent.
