Section 12 of 16 in Bechukotai — 3 segments
Segment 1
An addition, for what? “To chastise you seven times for your sins.” Seven! But if the Holy One, blessed be He, were to collect what is His, the world could not bear it even for one moment, as it is written, “If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” (Ps. 130, 3) — and you say, “seven times for your sins”!
Segment 2
It may be asked: How can this be, seeing that if God were to collect His due, the world could not endure for an instant? The truth is that this “seven” refers to the Sabbatical Year which is so called: “seven” will chastise you.’
Segment 3
AND I ALSO WILL CHASTISE YOU SEVEN TIMES FOR YOUR SINS. R. Abba said: ‘This means that I will rouse this Seven against you. Observe the deep love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel.
