Segment 1א׳

(במדבר כ״ב:ה׳) וַיִשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים אֶל בִּלְעָם בֶּן בְּעוֹר וְגוֹ'. הִנֵּה עַם יָצָא מִמִּצְרַיִם וְגוֹ'. הָכָא אִית עֶשְׂרִין וּתְמַנְיָא תֵּיבִין, לָקֳבֵל כ"ח דַּרְגִין דְּחַרְשֵׁי קוּסְמִין דְּצִפּוֹר. וְאִית לְאִסְתַּכְּלָא, מַאן דְּבָעָא לְמַלְּלָא בֵּיהּ בְּבִלְעָם, וּלְאִתְחַבְּרָא בַּהֲדֵיהּ, אֲמַאי שָׁדַר לֵיהּ מִיַּד, עַד לָא יֵיתֵי לְגַבֵּיהּ, מִלִּין בְּפֵירוּשָׁא, דְּקָאָמַר הִנֵּה עַם יָצָא מִמִּצְרַיִם וְעַתָּה לְכָה אָרָה לִי, הֲוָה לֵיהּ לְאִתְחַבְּרָא בַּהֲדֵיהּ בְּקַדְמִיתָא, וּלְפַיְּיסָא וּלְשׁוֹחֲדָא לֵיהּ, וּלְבָתַר לְאוֹדָעָא לֵיהּ מִלּוֹי.

AND HE SENT MESSENGERS UNTO BALAAM THE SON OF BEOR. There are here twenty-eight words corresponding to the twenty-eight degrees of the sorceries of the bird. It may be asked, Why did Balak commence with Balaam so abruptly? He should have first ingratiated himself with him and then told him what he wanted.

Segment 2ב׳

אֶלָּא אָמַר רִבִּי יוֹסֵי, מֵהָכָא אִשְׁתְּמוֹדַע דְּהָא יָדַע בָּלָק רְעוּתֵיהּ דְּהַהוּא רָשָׁע, דְּבָעָא לְאִתְיַקְּרָא תָּדִיר בְּמִלִּין רַבְרְבִין, וְלֵית לֵיהּ תִּיאוּבְתָא, אֶלָּא כַּד עָבִיד בִּישִׁין.

The truth is’, said R. Jose, ‘that we see from here that Balak knew the disposition of that bad man, that he was always craving for honour and had no pleasure save in doing evil.

Segment 3ג׳

בָּלָק קָסָם קְסָמִין וְעָבִיד חַרְשִׁין וְאַתְקִין צִפָּרָא. וְיָדַע דְּדַרְגִּין דְּמֹשֶׁה עִלָּאִין וְיַקִּירִין, וְחָרָשׁ בְּחַרְשׁוֹי וְקָסָם בְּקִסְמוֹי, וְיָדַע דְּדַרְגִּין דְּבִלְעָם הֲווֹ לָקֳּבְלַיְיהוּ, מִיַּד ויִשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים אֶל בִּלְעָם בֶּן בְּעוֹר.

Balak, through his sorceries, knew that the grades of Moses were very high, and he knew by the same means that the grades of Balaam corresponded.

Segment 4ד׳

פְּתוֹרָה: שְׁמָא דְּאַתְרָא הֲוָה. כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, (דברים כ״ג:ה׳) מִפְּתוֹר אֲרַם נַהֲרַיִם לְקַלְלֶךָּ. אֲמַאי אִקְרֵי הָכִי. בְּגִין דִּכְתִּיב, (ישעיהו ס״ה:י״א) הָעֹרְכִים לַגַּד שֻׁלְחָן. וּפָתוֹרָא הֲוָה מְסַדֵּר תַּמָּן כָּל יוֹמָא. דְּהָכִי הוּא תִּקּוּנָא דְּסִטְרִין בִּישִׁין, מְסַדְּרִין קַמַּיְיהוּ פְּתוֹרָא בְּמֵיכְלָא וּבְמִשְׁתְּיָיא, וְעַבְדִּין חַרְשִׁין, וּמְקַטְרִין לְקַמֵּי פְּתוֹרָא, וּמִתְכַּנְשִׁין תַּמָּן כָּל רוּחִין מִסְאֲבִין, וְאוֹדְעִין לוֹן מַה דְּאִינּוּן בָּעָאן. וְכָל חַרְשִׁין וְקוֹסְמִין דְּעָלְמָא עַל הַהוּא פְּתוֹרָא הֲווֹ, וּבְגִין כָּךְ אִקְרֵי שְׁמָא דְּאַתְרָא הַהוּא פְּתוֹרָא. דְּהָכִי קוֹרִין בְּאֲרַם נַהֲרַיִם לַשֻׁלְחָן פְּתוֹרָא.

Pethor, to which he sent, was the town of Balaam; it was so called because Balaam used to prepare a table (pethor) there with food and drink for the evil sides, as is the custom of those who practise magic, in order to bring together the evil spirits to answer their inquiries.’

Segment 5ה׳

פָּתַח וְאָמַר (שמות כ״ה:כ״ג) וְעָשִׂיתָ שֻׁלְחָן עֲצֵי שִׁטִּים וְגוֹ'. וּכְתִיב (שמות כ״ה:ל׳) וְנָתַתָּ עַל הַשֻּׁלְחָן לֶחֶם פָּנִים וְגוֹ'. כָּל אִינּוּן מָאנֵי קוּדְשָׁא, בָּעָא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְמֶעְבַּד קַמֵּיהּ, לְאַמְשָׁכָא רוּחָא קַדִישָׁא מֵעֵילָּא לְתַתָּא. הַהוּא רָשָׁע דְּבִלְעָם, הֲוָה מְסַדֵּר הָכִי לְסִטְרָא אַחֲרָא. וַהֲוָה מְסַדֵּר שֻׁלְחָן, וְנָהֲמָא דְּאִקְרֵי לֶחֶם מְגוֹאָל, כְּמָה דְּאִתְּמַר. דְּהָכִי אָזִיל סְטָר אַחֲרָא בָּתַר קְדוּשָׁה, כְּקוֹף בָּתַר בְּנֵי נָשָׁא. וּשְׁלֹמֹה מַלְכָּא צָוַוח וְאָמַר, (קהלת ב׳:י״ב) כִּי מֶה הָאָדָם שֶׁיָּבוֹא אַחֲרֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ אֵת אֲשֶׁר כְּבָר עָשׂוּהוּ. וְהָא (קס"ה) אִתְּמַר קְרָא דָּא.

He then cited the verse: “And thou shalt make a table of acacia wood” (Ex. 25, 23), and again, “Thou shalt put upon the table shew bread”, etc. ‘God desired all those holy vessels to be made in order that the holy spirit might be drawn down from heaven to earth. Similarly the wicked Balaam prepared one for the other side, with bread which is called “abominable bread”.
