“And he said, What men are these with you?” (Num. 22, 9). His grade was from the other side of the left, which had need to ask. And although the Companions have roused themselves over this in another manner, and they say that the Holy One, blessed be He, made trial of him in his words — there were three: one Hezekiah, one Ezekiel, and one Balaam. Two did not stand as they should, and one stood. And who was he? Ezekiel, as it is written, “Can these bones live?”, and he turned and said, “And I said, O Lord God, You know” (Ezek. 37, 3). Hezekiah said, “They are come from a far country, from Babylon” (II Kings 20, 14). Balaam said, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me” — I am esteemed in the eyes of kings and rulers. And the Holy One, blessed be He, asked him in order to lead him astray, as it is written, “He increases the nations and destroys them” (Job 12, 23); and this has been explained.
Segment 2ב׳

”And God met Balaam, And God came to Balaam’.

He replied: A king was once sitting on his throne in his palace when a leper came to the gate. Who is knocking at the gate? he asked. They said: A certain leper. He said: He must not enter here and defile the palace. I know that if I tell this to a messenger he will take no notice, and my son will come in and be defiled by contact with him. I will therefore go and threaten him so that he shall go away from the abode of my son and not defile him. So the king got up and went to him and threatened him, saying: Leper, leper, keep away from the path of my son, and if not I will tell the sons of my handmaidens to cut you in pieces.
