Segment 1

What is “the fruit of goodly trees” (peri etz hadar)? The tree of the citron. And what is hadar? It is that which is goodly above all; and this is the hadar of the Song of Songs, of which it is written, (S. S. 6, 10) “Who is she that looks forth as the dawn?” And this is on account of the female; and after her name the female was taken from man, for the lower world cannot endure without a female. And what is the reason she is called nekevah (female)? Because her nekavim (orifices) are wide, and she has more orifices than the man. And what are they? The orifices are the breasts and the womb and the vessel that receives the child.

Segment 2

And what is it that they said, that the Song of Songs is goodly above all the holy books? Yes: for R. Johanan said, all the books are holy and the Song of Songs is the holy of holies. And what is “the holy of holies”? Rather, holy, which is holy to the holies. And what are those holies? Those that correspond to the six sides in man; and “holy” is theirs, a holy for them all.

Segment 3

And what is this “holy”? The citron, which is the hadar of all. And why is its name called hadar? Do not read hadar but he dar (the letter He dwells). This is the citron, which is separated from the binding of the lulav, and the commandment of the lulav is not fulfilled except by it; and it too is bound with them all, for it is with each one and it is with all of them together.
