Section 40 of 52 in Addenda, Volume I — 7 segments
Segment 1
The eighth — what is it? The Holy One, blessed be He, has one Righteous One in the world, and he is dear to Him because he sustains the whole world entire; and he is its foundation, and he nourishes it and makes it grow and rears it and gladdens it. Beloved and dear above, feared and mighty below; ordered and accepted above, ordered and accepted below. And he is the foundation of all souls.
Segment 2
You said “the eighth,” and you said “the foundation of all souls”; yet it is written, “and on the seventh day He ceased from work and rested.” Yes, it is the seventh; but that is because it decides between them, for there are three below and three above, and it is the one that decides between them.
Segment 3
And what is the reason that it is called the seventh? And is it indeed in the seventh place? No. Rather, because the Holy One, blessed be He, rested on the Sabbath by that same attribute, as it is written, (Ex. 31, 17) “For six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He ceased from work and rested.” This teaches that every single day has one utterance that is lord over it — not because it was created on it, but because it works in the world the work that is handed into its hand. They all wrought their work and established their deeds by themselves; the seventh day came and wrought its work. They all rejoiced, and the Holy One, blessed be He, as well. And more than that: its soul was enlarged, as it is written, “and on the seventh day He ceased from work and rested.”
