Segment 1א׳

פָּתַח רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן וְדָרַשׁ, (שיר השירים א׳:ג׳) לְרֵיחַ שְׁמָנֶיךָ טוֹבִים וְגוֹ'. הַאי קְרָא אִסְתַּכַּלְנָא בֵּיהּ, וְהָכִי הוּא. לְרֵיחַ, מַאי רֵיחַ. רֵיחַ דִּקְטֹרֶת דְּאִיהוּ דְּקִיקָא וּמָעַלְיָא וּפְנִימָאָה מִכֹּלָּא, וְכַד סָלִיק הַהוּא רֵיחַ לְאִתְקַשְּׁרָא, בְּהַהוּא מְשַׁח רְבוּת דְּנַחֲלֵי מַבּוּעָא, אִתְּעֲרוּ דָּא בְּדָא וְאִתְקְטָרוּ כַּחֲדָא. וּכְדֵין אִינּוּן מִשְׁחָן טָבָאן לְאַנְהָרָא. כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, לְרֵיחַ שְׁמָנֶיךָ טוֹבִים.

R. Simeon then expounded the verse: “In fragrance thine ointments are good” (S.S. 1, 3). ‘This fragrance is the odour of the incense, which is more subtle and intimate than any other, and when it ascends to unite with the anointing oil of the streams of the Source they stimulate one another, and then those oils are good for giving light,

Segment 2ב׳

וּכְדֵין אִתְרַק מִשְׁחָא מִדַּרְגָּא לְדַרְגָּא, בְּאִינּוּן דַּרְגִּין דְּאִקְרוּן שְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, שֶׁמֶן תּוּרַק שְׁמֶךָ עַל כֵּן עֲלָמוֹת אֲהֵבוּךָ. מַאי עֲלָמוֹת. כְּמָה דְּאוֹקִימְנָא עוֹלָמוֹת, עוֹלָמוֹת מַמָּשׁ, דָּבָר אַחֵר עַל כֵּן עֲלָמוֹת אֲהֵבוּךָ. כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, (תהילים מ״ו:א׳) עַל עֲלָמוֹת שִׁיר. וְכֹלָּא חַד.

and the oil flows from grade to grade through those grades which are called the Holy Name; hence it is written, “therefore do maidens love thee” (Ibid.), where ‘alamoth (maidens) may be read ‘olamoth (worlds); and from thence blessings spread over all below.

Segment 3ג׳

וּבְסִפְרָא דְּרַב הַמְנוּנָא סַבָא כְּתִיב, מַאי עוֹלָמוֹת. כְּמָה דְּאַתְּ אָמֵר, (משלי ל״א:ט״ו) וַתִּתֵּן טֶרֶף לְבֵיתָהּ וְחֹק לְנַעֲרוֹתֶיהָ. נַעֲרוֹתֶיהָ הָנֵי עֲלָמוֹת, אֲהֵבוּךָ, לְבָרְכָא שְׁמָךְ, וּלְזַמְּרָא קַמָּךְ, וּמִתַּמָּן אִשְׁתַּכְּחָן בִּרְכָאן בְּכֻלְּהוּ תַּתָּאֵי, וּמִתְבָּרְכִין עִלָּאִין וְתַתָּאִין.

And in the book of Rab Hamnuna the Elder it is written: What are the worlds? As it says, “She gives food to her household, and a portion to her maidens” (Prov. 31, 15). “Her maidens” — these are those worlds. “They have loved You” — to bless Your Name and to sing before You; and from there blessings are found in all those below, and upper and lower are blessed.

Segment 4ד׳

דָּבָר אַחֵר עַל כֵּן עֲלָמוֹת אֲהֵבוּךָ. שַׁפִּיר הוּא מַאן דְּאָמַר. עַל מָוְת אֲהֵבוּךָ, דְּהָא בְּמִלָּה דָּא מָארֵיהוֹן דְּדִינִין אִתְבַּסְּמָן, וּבְגִין דְּהַאי קְטֹרֶת, אִתְקְטַר בְּמִשְׁחָא דִּלְעֵילָּא יַתִּיר, אִתְחֲשָׁב קָמֵיהּ דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, מִכָּל קָרְבְּנִין וְעִלָּוָון. אָמְרָה כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֲנָא כִּקְטֹרֶת, וְאַנְתְּ כְּמִשְׁחָא, מָשְׁכֵנִי אַחֲרֶיךָ נָרוּצָה וְגוֹ'. נָרוּצָה: כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, עַל כֵּן עֲלָמוֹת אֲהֵבוּךָ. אֲנָא וְכָל אוּכְלוּסִין, דְּהָא כֻּלְּהוּ בִּי אֲחִידָן, וְעַל דָּא מָשְׁכֵנִי, דְּהָא בִּי תַּלְיָין.

And because this incense is bound up with the supernal ointment more closely it is more esteemed by the Almighty Holy One, blessed be He, than all offerings and sacrifices. The verse continues: “Draw me, we will run after thee”. Therefore the Community of Israel says: “I am like incense and thou art like oil, draw me after thee, and we shall run, I and all my hosts.”

הֱבִיאַנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ חֲדָרָיו. אִם יֵיעוּל לִי מַלְכָּא בְּאִדָרוֹי, נָגִילָה וְנִשְׂמְחָה בָּךְ, אֲנָא וְכֻלְּהוּ אוּכְלוּסִין. תָּאנָא. כֻּלְּהוּ אוּכְלוּסִין, בְּשַׁעֲתָא דִּכְנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל חַדָּאת וּמִתְבָּרְכָא, כֻּלְּהוּ חַדָּאן, וְדִינָא לָא שַׁרְיָא כְּדֵין בְּעָלְמָא. וְעַל דָּא כְּתִיב, (תהילים צ״ו:י״א) יִשְׂמְחוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם וְתָגֵל הָאָרֶץ.

“Let the King bring me to his chambers that we may all be glad and rejoice in thee”.’
