R. Hiya said: ‘This is the last of the unholy crowns, as we have learnt.’ R. Isaac said, in the name of R. Judah, that the souls of the wicked are the demons of this world.

Segment 2

Said R. Jose: ‘If so, the wicked are well off; where is their punishment in Gehinnom? Where is the evil in store for them in the other world?’ R. Hiya replied: ‘We have learnt and laid down that when the souls of the wicked leave this world many executioners of judgement await them and take them to Gehinnom, and subject them there to three tortures every day. Afterwards they go about the world in company with them and mislead the wicked, from whom repentance is withheld, and then return to Gehinnom and punish them there, and so every day’.

Segment 3

Afterwards, when they have gone about with them and roamed with them through the world, they return to their graves and see the worm of the body picking at the flesh, and they mourn over them. And those sorcerers would go to the graveyards and work their sorceries, and make an image of a man and slaughter a he-goat before it. Afterwards they bring that he-goat into that grave, and that image they break into four parts and set it up at the four corners of the grave. Then they work their sorceries, and those bands gather, and they are evil kinds, and they bring that soul, and it enters the grave and speaks with them.
