Torah by the numbers

By our count of the Leningrad Codex, the Torah has 304,850 letters in 79,982 words across 5,853 verses and 187 chapters.

Every figure on this page is counted from the text this site indexes: the Leningrad Codex, the oldest complete manuscript of the Masoretic Tanakh, letter for letter as the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible encodes it, and the same letters every gematria value here is computed from. Below them stands what the Talmud says the early scribes counted. Neither is offered as the one true count.

What the Talmud says the scribes counted

לפיכך נקראו ראשונים סופרים שהיו סופרים כל האותיות שבתורה שהיו אומרים וא"ו (ויקרא יא, מב) דגחון חציין של אותיות של ס"ת (ויקרא י, טז) דרש דרש חציין של תיבות (ויקרא יג, לג) "והתגלח" של פסוקים

Therefore the early ones were called soferim — scribes — for they were soferim, counters, of all the letters that are in the Torah. For they used to say: the vav of gachon (Leviticus 11:42) is the middle of the letters of a Torah scroll; darosh darash (Leviticus 10:16), the middle of the words; ve-hitgalach (Leviticus 13:33), of the verses.

בעי רב יוסף וא"ו דגחון מהאי גיסא או מהאי גיסא א"ל ניתי ס"ת ואימנינהו מי לא אמר רבה בר בר חנה לא זזו משם עד שהביאו ספר תורה ומנאום א"ל אינהו בקיאי בחסירות ויתרות אנן לא בקיאינן

Rav Yosef asked: the vav of gachon — does it belong to this side or to that side? He said to him: let a Torah scroll be brought and let us count them! Did not Rabbah bar bar Chana say: they did not stir from there until they brought a Torah scroll and counted them? He said to him: they were expert in defective and full spellings; we are not expert.

בעי רב יוסף והתגלח מהאי גיסא או מהאי גיסא א"ל אביי פסוקי מיהא ליתו לימנוי' בפסוקי נמי לא בקיאינן

Rav Yosef asked: ve-hitgalach — does it belong to this side or to that side? Abaye said to him: the verses, at any rate — let them be brought and let us count them! In verses too we are not expert.

Kiddushin 30a, from our Talmud Bavli with our own English.

Their count and ours

  • The middle letter: the ו of גחון (Leviticus 11:42). In our count that ו is letter 157,239 of 304,850, 4,814 letters after our middle, which falls between the ה and the ח of החזה in Leviticus 8:29.
  • The middle of the words: דרש דרש (Leviticus 10:16). In our count they are words 40,921 and 40,922 of 79,982, 930 words after our middle, and our middle falls between ויקדשהו and לכפר in Leviticus 8:15.
  • The middle verse: Leviticus 13:33, the verse of והתגלח. In our count it is verse 3,086 of 5,853, 159 verses after our middle, which is Leviticus 8:9.

Why the counts differ

Full and defective spellings. Many Hebrew words can be written with or without a vav or a yod, and manuscripts do not agree on every one. The Gemara above says it plainly: by Rav Yosef's time the sages no longer trusted themselves to settle a count of letters. One letter more or less moves the middle.

Ketiv and qere. In 67 places in the Torah (1,254 in the Tanakh) the word read aloud differs from the word written. We count what is written, the ketiv, as every search on this site does.

Words joined by a maqaf. The Torah's text joins words with a maqaf 11,474 times (42,569 in the Tanakh). Like the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible, we count each joined word as a word of its own, so a count that takes a joined pair as one word comes out lower.

Verses. In the same passage Abaye says that even in verses we are not expert, and Rav Acha bar Adda reports that in the Land of Israel one verse (Exodus 19:9) was read as three. Verse divisions differ between traditions, and so do the totals.

The figures most commonly cited for the Torah, 304,805 letters and 5,845 verses, come from counts like these made on other copies and other divisions. Our count of the Leningrad Codex as we index it gives 304,850 letters and 5,853 verses. Both are printed here; neither is claimed as the correct one.

Why do counts of the Torah's letters differ?

Because a count depends on spelling and division: manuscripts differ in a few full and defective spellings, a count may follow the written text (ketiv) or the reading (qere), words joined by a maqaf may be counted as one or two, and verses have been divided differently; the Talmud itself says we are not expert in spellings or in verses.

Counted as written: the consonants of the Masoretic text, final forms and all, vowels and cantillation set aside. Chapters are the standard printed chapters.
