Se’if 1א׳
The firstborn of an unclean animal applies in every place and at every time. And it applies only to donkeys. And this is its mitzvah: that every Israelite who has a she-donkey that bore its first redeems it with a lamb from the sheep or from the goats, whether male or female, whether unblemished or blemished, whether large or small, and gives it to a priest. And from when is he liable to redeem it? From when it is born until it dies; but the mitzvah is to redeem it immediately, so as not to delay the mitzvah. And after he redeems it, it is wholly unconsecrated, and permitted in shearing and in work like any other unconsecrated animal. And the priest too does with the lamb as with any other unconsecrated animal.
Se’if 2ב׳
One does not redeem with a calf, nor with a wild animal, nor with a slaughtered lamb, nor with a tereifah (an animal with a fatal defect), nor with kilayim (an animal born of two kinds crossed together), nor with a koy (a beast whose status, whether domestic or wild, is in doubt).
Se’if 3ג׳
One does not redeem with a lamb that resembles another kind; and if he redeemed, it is redeemed. And some say that if he redeemed with it, it is a doubt (Tur in the name of the Rosh).
