It is a positive commandment for every man of Israel to redeem his son who is a firstborn to his Israelite mother, with five sela, which are a hundred and twenty ma'ah, which are thirty dirhams of refined silver. And see above, siman 294, how much the ma'ah is. And some say that the five sela are about the value of two Rhenish gold pieces, which are two Polish gold pieces (Piskei Maharai, siman 48).
Se’if 2ב׳
A woman is not obliged to redeem her son (the language of the Rambam, chapter 11 of the Laws of Bikkurim, law 2).
Se’if 3ג׳
These five sela he gives to the priest in money or in money's worth, of any thing he wishes, except for lands and slaves and bonds; and if he redeemed him with these, he is not redeemed.
