A woman who passed water, and blood came out with her urine — whether she passed water standing or whether she passed water sitting — this one is clean. And even if she felt her body and it quivered, she is not concerned, for this is the feeling of her urine, since urine does not come from the chamber, and this blood is the blood of a wound in the bowel or in the kidney. Hagah [Rema]: And there are those who say that she is not to be permitted save where she was sitting and passed water; but where she was standing, if it streams into the basin and blood is found there, she is clean, but if it trickles upon the rim of the basin and blood is found there, she is unclean, since, the place being narrow, they turn back to the source and bring blood (the Tur in the name of the Rosh). And there are those who say that even where she was sitting she is not to be permitted save where it streams and the blood is found within the basin, but upon the rim of the basin she is unclean; and where she was standing, in every manner she is unclean. (Mordechai, the Laws of Niddah, and Beit Yosef in the name of Hagahot Maimoni and Shaarei Dura and Binyamin Ze'ev, siman 190, and so it is implied from a responsum of the Ran, and Maharam in the responsa, siman 630, and Agudah and Hagahat Shaarei Dura in the name of Maharat) And so is the practice. And this is specifically where the blood is found in a basin in which she alone passes water, so that it is known that it is from her; but if it is found in a basin in which a man and a woman cast water, she is clean in every manner (Tur and the poskim, from the Shas). And all this is where blood was found by chance; but a woman who is accustomed to see blood in her urine and feels pain at the hour when she casts water — such as the illness that they call harin vind — it seems that there is ground to permit in every manner, for there are clear indications that she has a wound that pains her at the casting of urine, and from it the blood comes out. And even if she found blood after the casting of urine, when she wipes herself, she is clean; for since she feels pain and does not find blood save after the casting of urine, it is certainly the blood of a wound, (in Hagahat Shaarei Dura in the name of Maharil, and it is in a responsum of Maharil, siman 173, that he wrote so in the name of Maharash; and Beit Yosef in the name of Agur in the name of Maharash). But there are those who are stringent, not to permit save in a woman who has a veset (the fixed time at which a woman's period comes), and to require her an examination (the view of Maharil there) — that is, before she passes water she shall examine herself well in the holes and in the crevices, and if she does not find blood she shall insert clean wadding upon the source within, and pass water, and wipe herself well of her urine, and take out the wadding; if it is clean, it is a great proof that the blood is not from the source, (there, and in Maharyu) and so is the practice. And if she examined herself three times in this manner and found the wadding clean, she is permitted thereafter without an examination when it is not the hour of her veset, for it is a presumption that it is the blood of a wound, since she does not find it save after she has passed water. And all this is specifically where she feels pain with her urine; but if she does not feel pain, and examines herself after the casting of water and finds blood, if she did not find blood in her urine she is certainly unclean, (so it is implied there, and in Hagahot Maimoni and in Mordechai there). But if she found blood within her urine and also upon the examining cloth with which she examined herself, there are those who say that she is unclean, for they permitted only blood that is found within her urine, (Mordechai, the Laws of Niddah). And there are those who say that she is clean, for the blood that was found is attributed to what still remained of the drainings of her urine, (Beit Yosef, from the implication of the Rosh and the Ran) (and to my poor understanding nothing at all is implied from the Rosh). And there is ground to be stringent; however, she need not examine after this. And even if she was accustomed to see, if she examined herself three times and found herself clean, she no longer requires an examination, (there, in Mordechai). And if she is not accustomed to see save at intervals, she fixes herself a veset if it is in a fixed manner, whether an equal veset or a veset of skippings (there). And if she does not find blood afterwards when she examines herself, but only grains, grains like sand and red gravel, and the like of this is found also in her urine; and at the hour of her veset, or at other times, she sees real blood like the rest of women, and she does not find that sand save after her urine — she is clean, for it is not blood but only sand, whose way it is to be formed in the kidneys, (Beit Yosef in the name of a responsum of the Ran).
