Yaakov's eleventh son and firstborn of Rachel, sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers out of jealousy over their father's favor and his dreams (Genesis 37). He rose to become viceroy of Egypt under Pharaoh, preserved his family through famine, and his descendants became the tribes of Efrayim and Menashe (Genesis 39-50). His name plays on the Hebrew verb “to add,” from Rachel's own words at his birth (Genesis 30:24), so the count includes both uses.

A spelling is not a name. The written word יוסף stands 203 times in the corpus, which is a different question and often a different number: the same letters can spell another name or an ordinary word, and a name written with a particle attached is a word that search never returns. It is here, as itself.
