Yaakov's eleventh son and firstborn of Rachel, sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers out of jealousy over their father's favor and his dreams (Genesis 37). He rose to become viceroy of Egypt under Pharaoh, preserved his family through famine, and his descendants became the tribes of Efrayim and Menashe (Genesis 39-50). His name plays on the Hebrew verb “to add,” from Rachel's own words at his birth (Genesis 30:24), so the count includes both uses.
