Gifts to the Poor 1
Chapter 1 of 10 in Gifts to the Poor — 15 halachot
Halacha 1
One who reaps his field shall not reap the whole of the field entire; rather he leaves a little standing grain for the poor at the end of the field, as it is said (Leviticus 23:22), "You shall not wholly reap the corner of your field." It is all one whether he reaps or plucks. And this that he leaves is what is called peah, the corner.
Halacha 2
And just as he leaves in the field, so with trees: when he gathers their fruits he leaves a little for the poor. If he transgressed and reaped the whole field, or gathered all the fruit of the tree, he takes a little of what he reaped or of what he gathered and gives it to the poor, for the giving of it is a positive commandment, as it is said (Leviticus 23:22), "you shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger." And even if he ground the standing grain and kneaded it and baked it into bread, he gives peah from it to the poor.
Halacha 3
If all the harvest that he reaped was lost, or was burned, before he gave the peah, he is flogged; for he has transgressed a negative commandment and cannot fulfil the positive commandment in it, to which it was made over.
