יהודה בן טבאי Yehuda ben Tabbai
Zugot · 3rd Pair (c. 170 BCE – 10 CE) — named 5 times across 1 tractate of the Bavli.
Yehuda ben Tabbai belongs to the third of the five Pairs, serving alongside Shimon ben Shetach in the generations before Hillel and Shammai. All five of his mentions in this corpus fall in Chagigah, in that tractate's account of the Pairs and of the question of laying hands on a festival offering — the one question, the tradition says, on which the Pairs differed.
The Talmud also preserves his resolve, taken after a judgement he came to regret, never again to rule except in his colleague's presence: a rare recorded change of mind in a judge of that age.
Of the third pair.
