Tanna · 4th generation (c. 135–170 CE) — named 131 times across 17 tractates of the Bavli.
Sumchos ben Yosef, of the fourth tannaitic generation, was Rabbi Meir's student and, the tradition says, could give forty-eight reasons for every point of ritual law.
One ruling has kept his name in constant use: that money whose ownership is in doubt is divided between the claimants without an oath. It stands against the ordinary rule that the burden of proof lies on the one who would extract, and the argument between the two positions runs through Bava Kamma and Bava Metzia — which is where nearly half of his hundred and thirty mentions fall. A student of Nezikin meets him within a few pages of opening the tractate.
