The Sages of the Talmud

שמואל הקטן Shmuel HaKatan

Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 12 times across 5 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 2nd generation×12 named in the Bavli5 tractates

Shmuel HaKatan, of the second tannaitic generation, is the sage who rose at Yavneh when Rabban Gamliel asked whether anyone could compose the blessing against the sectarians, and composed it — the blessing that stands in the Amidah still. The Talmud notes that when he forgot it the following year he was allowed to stand and search for it, because he was the one who had made it.

He is named a dozen times across five tractates, heaviest in Sanhedrin, Berachot and Taanit. In Avot he teaches the verse: do not rejoice when your enemy falls.

Composed the blessing against slanderers.
