The Sages of the Talmud

שמעון בן שטח Shimon ben Shetach

Zugot · 3rd Pair (c. 170 BCE – 10 CE) — named 32 times across 10 tractates of the Bavli.

Zugot · 3rd Pair×32 named in the Bavli10 tractates

Shimon ben Shetach, of the third of the five Pairs, sat with Yehuda ben Tabbai and was the brother of the queen. He is remembered as the man who restored the Torah to its standing after a hard age, and for two acts in particular: the ordinance of the ketubah, which secured a wife's claim against her husband's estate, and the hanging of the eighty women at Ashkelon, which the Talmud itself brings as an emergency measure and not as the law.

He is named some thirty times across ten tractates, heaviest in Chagigah and Sanhedrin — the tractates of the courts and of the transmission of the tradition.

Of the third pair; brother of Queen Shlomtzion.
