The Sages of the Talmud

שמעיה Shemaya

Zugot · 4th Pair (c. 170 BCE – 10 CE) — named 14 times across 8 tractates of the Bavli.

Zugot · 4th Pair×14 named in the Bavli8 tractates

Shemaya, of the fourth of the five Pairs, sat with Avtalyon and taught Hillel. The two are inseparable in the Talmud's memory, and this index matches only the fixed phrase in which they stand together — so every one of his mentions here is a mention of the pair. His word in Avot is the one every learner meets early: love work, hate high office, and do not make yourself known to the ruling power.

He is named some fourteen times across eight tractates, heaviest in Pesachim and Yoma, where the two of them appear at the head of the chain that runs down to Hillel and Shammai.

Of the fourth pair; teacher of Hillel. Only the fixed pair-phrase is matched — bare שמעיה is also an Amora's name.
