שמאי Shammai
Zugot · 5th Pair (c. 170 BCE – 10 CE) — named 117 times across 19 tractates of the Bavli.
Shammai formed, with Hillel, the last of the five Pairs, and served as av beit din. His school, Beit Shammai, argues with Beit Hillel through the whole of the Mishnah; the law follows Beit Hillel, but Beit Shammai's reasoning is preserved and studied, and the tradition holds that both are the words of the living God.
He was exacting, and the Talmud sets his sternness beside Hillel's patience in the stories of the converts he sent away — telling them plainly that his own quickness did not serve them. His own teaching, in Avot, is the balance to it: make your Torah fixed, say little and do much, and receive every person with a pleasant countenance. He is named some hundred and twenty times, heaviest in Shabbat and Niddah.
Of the fifth pair; Beit Shammai is his school, and בית שמאי is not counted here.
