רב יוסף בר חמא Rav Yosef bar Chama

Amora of Babylonia · 3rd generation (c. 290–320 CE) — named 27 times across 12 tractates of the Bavli.

Amora of Babylonia · 3rd generation×27 named in the Bavli12 tractates5 as a patronymic

Rav Yosef bar Chama, of the third Babylonian generation, was the father of Rava, and the Bavli names him both in his own right and inside his son's fuller name, Rava bar Yosef bar Chama.

He is cited some twenty-seven times across twelve tractates, five of those as a patronymic, and heaviest by far in Bava Batra. He is remembered in the reference tradition as a man of means as well as a sage, and the Talmud brings him among the authorities his son's generation had to answer.

Father of Rava.
