The Sages of the Talmud

רב יימר Rav Yeimar

Amora of Babylonia · 6th generation (c. 375–425 CE) — named 43 times across 21 tractates of the Bavli.

Amora of Babylonia · 6th generation×43 named in the Bavli21 tractates

Rav Yeimar, of the sixth Babylonian generation, belongs to Rav Ashi's generation at Sura, and the tradition of the geonim names him among those who held the headship of that academy in the years around Rav Ashi.

He is cited some forty-three times across twenty-one tractates, heaviest in Bava Batra and Chullin, and is named beside Rav Ashi more than beside anyone else. His contributions are typically the practical ones of the last amoraic generation: what the ruling comes to, and what was in fact done.

Head of Sura in Rav Ashi's generation.
