Rav Shmuel, of the fourth Babylonian generation, is cited some two hundred and forty times across thirty tractates, most heavily in Shabbat, Bava Batra and Shevuot.

More than one Babylonian sage bears the plain name רב שמואל, and the Bavli does not mark which is meant; the fuller forms — Rav Shmuel bar Yehuda, Rav Shmuel bar Nachmani and others — belong to their own entries. This one is therefore left as a name rather than a life, and marked for review.

Several sages of the name.
