Rav Shmuel bar Shilat, of the second Babylonian generation, was a teacher of young children, and it is in that office that the Talmud remembers him. Rav's counsel to him on how children are to be taught — at what age a boy may be taken in, how far he may be pressed, and how lightly he must be corrected — is among the best-known passages on education in the Bavli.

Half of his eight mentions fall in Bava Batra, where that counsel stands, and the rest in Ketubot, Eruvin and Shabbat. It is told there too that when Rav once found him outside his schoolroom, he answered that even then his mind was on the children.
