Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachmani, of the third amoraic generation in Eretz Yisrael, is one of the Talmud's principal aggadists. He is quoted as a transmitter more than a hundred times in this corpus, nearly all of it in the formula Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachmani said in the name of Rabbi Yonatan, which introduces a great part of the Bavli's exposition of the narrative portions of Scripture.

He was a judge and a public teacher, and his readings of the lives of the patriarchs, of Job and of the kings are among the most quoted in later midrashic literature. He is named some hundred and eighty times, heaviest in Sanhedrin, Shabbat, Berachot and Sotah.
