The Sages of the Talmud

רב שימי בר חייא Rav Shimi bar Chiya

Amora of Babylonia · 2nd generation (c. 250–290 CE) — named 24 times across 14 tractates of the Bavli.

Amora of Babylonia · 2nd generation×24 named in the Bavli14 tractates

Rav Shimi bar Chiya, of the second Babylonian generation, was a grandson of Rabbi Chiya. He is named some two dozen times across fourteen tractates, spread about as evenly as a distribution can be, with no tractate carrying more than three.

Rav and Shmuel are the names he stands beside most often, which is the company his generation kept, and the Talmud brings him in short rulings rather than in extended argument.

Grandson of Rabbi Chiya.
