Amora of Babylonia · 5th generation×62 named in the Bavli26 tractates

Rav Shimi bar Ashi, of the fifth Babylonian generation, was a student of Abaye and is named throughout the later Bavli in the company of Rav Papa and Rav Kahana.

He is cited some sixty times, spread across twenty-six tractates without gathering in any one — a distribution that fits a sage whose contribution is the clarifying comment rather than a body of rulings in a particular field. Several of his remarks are the Gemara's own explanation of why an earlier authority ruled as he did.

Of Abaye's students.
