Amora of Babylonia · 4th generation×15 named in the Bavli9 tractates

Rav Papa bar Shmuel, of the fourth Babylonian generation, sat as a judge in Rav Chisda's court — a different man from the Rav Papa of the fifth generation who headed Naresh, and the roster keeps them apart by the patronymic.

He is named some fifteen times across nine tractates, heaviest in Bava Batra and Bava Metzia, which is where a judge would be heard. Rava, Shmuel and Rav Chisda are the names he stands beside most.

A judge of Rav Chisda's court.
