Amora of Babylonia · 4th generation×536 named in the Bavli35 tractates

Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak, of the fourth Babylonian generation, served as rosh kallah in Rava's academy and afterwards headed Pumbedita. He is a different man from Rav Nachman bar Yaakov of Nehardea, two generations earlier, and the Talmud keeps them apart by the patronymic.

His characteristic contribution is the ordering one: he supplies the mnemonic, restates a dispute so its terms are clear, and points out when two authorities are saying the same thing in different words. He is named some five hundred and thirty times across thirty-five tractates, most often in the company of Rava.

Head of Pumbedita; a different man from Rav Nachman bar Yaakov.
