Amora of Babylonia · 4th generation×11 named in the Bavli5 tractates

Rav Mari bar Rachel, of the fourth Babylonian generation, is named for his mother — a matronymic almost unique among the sages of the Talmud, and the reference tradition identifies her as a daughter of Shmuel of Nehardea. The Bavli records that Rava held him fit for appointment and set him over an office in Babylonia, on the reasoning that a man whose mother is of Israel is of your brethren.

He is named some eleven times across five tractates, heaviest in Shabbat and Bechorot.

Named for his mother, Shmuel's daughter.
