Rav Chaviva, of the sixth Babylonian generation, belonged to Rav Ashi's circle. He is named some two dozen times across fifteen tractates, heaviest in Bava Metzia and otherwise spread very thinly, and Ravina is the name he stands beside most often.

The entry is marked for review; beyond the generation, the centre and the company he keeps in the corpus, the reference tradition holds little about him that can be stated firmly.

Of Rav Ashi's circle.
