The Sages of the Talmud

רב ביבי בר אביי Rav Bibi bar Abaye

Amora of Babylonia · 5th generation (c. 350–375 CE) — named 53 times across 17 tractates of the Bavli.

Amora of Babylonia · 5th generation×53 named in the Bavli17 tractates

Rav Bibi bar Abaye, of the fifth Babylonian generation, was the son of Abaye and appears throughout the later Bavli in the company of Rav Pappi, Rav Ashi and Rav Nachman.

He is cited some fifty times across seventeen tractates, heaviest in Eruvin and Shabbat. He is a different man from the Rav Bibi of the preceding generation, and the patronymic is what keeps them apart. Beyond his father's name and his generation, little more is firmly established about him.

Son of Abaye.
