Rav Assi belongs to the first Babylonian generation and was a colleague of Rav; the two are cited together and in dispute throughout the early strata of the Bavli. He is quoted in others' names some thirty times and cited by others some forty.

He is not the Eretz-Yisrael Rabbi Assi, the constant companion of Rabbi Ami two generations later, and in this corpus nothing separates the two men but the title — רב against רבי — which the index treats as load-bearing. His three hundred and fifty mentions cluster in Chullin, Kiddushin and Ketubot.

A Babylonian colleague of Rav. Distinct from the Eretz-Yisrael רבי אסי, and the רב/רבי distinction is what separates them.
